We highly recommend going to any length possible to see any of these artists in performance and we, obviously, think the same of the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center.

The orchestra, over-sized for this production of Puccini’s epic score was superb under the baton of Conductor Marco Armiliato. In particular, soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska, from Kyiv, Ukraine, in the title role of Turandot, tenor Yonghoon Lee, as Calàf and soprano Ermonela Jaho as Liù firmly established themselves as leading stars in those roles. They rose to the point where standing ovations for them was most notably in order.Īnd the leads accomplished simply the impossible! They delivered performances that rival the best ever seen on that, or any, stage. Supporting cast members were absolutely outstanding – consistently and throughout the performance. The chorus and the ballet companies performed with perfection. The costuming was meant to convey an ancient Asian royal court and it did so flawlessly. Much of the time there must have been about 15O human bodies on the stage. The shear size of the cast boggled my mind. Breath-taking is so cliché, yet so totally accurate. The set was HUGE, intricate and absolutely beautiful. It was stunning in scope, scale, intensity and absolute perfection. We have enoyed several truly remarkable performances and productions.īut we have NEVER experienced what we did last night.

We have enjoyed opera at La Scala, Zurich, London, Paris, Vienna and, of course, the Met. Last night I experienced an event that was absolutely over-the-top – The Metropolitan Opera’s 2022 production of the phenomenal Turandot. I am rarely at a loss of words, but I am now!
